Course Info:
Address: Bettyville, Newtown Rd, Carricklawn, Wexford
Description: Wexford Racecourse is a horse racing venue in the town of Wexford, Ireland which stages National Hunt racing. The earliest record of racing in the area is in the 1870s.
An undulating, right-handed, rectangular track of under nine furlongs in extent. Although the two-furlong home straight is slightly uphill this is very much a sharp track with tight turns which favours the speedy, handy type, particularly the hurdles course which is on the inside of the chase one. There are six fences to a circuit of the chase course with only one in the finishing straight.
History: Generally considered to be a galloping track, it is 1m4f long and right-handed and provides a solid test for the horses and riders. Usually attracting healthy fields under both flat and jump codes, Wexford is another of Ireland’s popular tracks and is situated on the east coast. The south east of Ireland is known to receive a lot more sunshine than the west, which makes for a happy hunting ground for racing regulars in the area. The course has great provisions for grandstand visitors and hospitality guests. This part of Ireland is renowned more for its many world class golf courses, but there is a strong feeling toward the racing culture too, and Wexford encapsulates that fact very well.
The course formerly staged Flat racing as well as National Hunt but on 1 June 2016 it was announced that with immediate effect Flat racing would be discontinued. This followed the track being switched from right-handed to left-handed in 2015. The course is an undulating left-handed course of one mile and four furlongs.
