Description: Market Rasen Racecourse is a National Hunt racecourse in the town of Market Rasen, in Lincolnshire, England.
The course is a right-handed oval with a circumference of around one-and-a-quarter miles. Although National Hunt racing is traditionally a winter sport, Market Rasen stages a year-round programme of racing.
Its most high-profile fixture is the Summer Plate meeting, normally staged on the third Saturday in July. This features the two-and-a-quarter miles Summer Hurdle and the eponymous Summer Plate, a two-and-three-quarter miles chase, both of which are among the most valuable National Hunt races staged in Britain during the summer months.
History: Right handed, sharp with minor undulations. Generally favours nippy types (though the ground can get testing), plenty of races being won by those who quicken best on the run to the first obstacle in the home straight. Fairly easy fences, with the downhill third last catching out fewer in recent seasons than used to be the case.
Located in stunning rural surroundings of Lincolnshire, Market Rasen is a venue beloved by local racing enthusiasts, who make up a significant portion of its loyal fanbase.
Throughout its history, the racecourse has never had a permanent home until the 20th century. The races would generally take place all over Market Rasen until 1924 when it settled for good in Willinghome Road, where it remains to this day.
The most heartwarming aspect of its history may be the fact that it was the fundraising efforts of four local gentlemen that purchased the 50 acres of land needed to give the racecourse a permanent home - showing just how dear the races really are to the local people.
Due to the shape and design of the track, this racecourse favours horses that are quick and agile thanks to its sharp corners. Amongst other high quality races that have been hosted at Market Rasen is the Summer Plate Handicap Chase, renowned for the beautiful French-bred horse Alcala snapping up £50,000.
