Address: Ross Road, Killarney, Co. Kerry
Description: Killarney Racecourse is a horse racing venue in Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland which stages both National Hunt and Flat racing. Racing at Killarney has been taking place since 1822.
Killarney Racecourse is widely considered to be one of the most picturesque racecourses in the world. Racing has taken place at the current location since 1936 and nowadays it hosts a total of 11 race days which are divided into three individual festivals in May, July and August.
Both Flat and National Hunt action takes place at Killarney and the highlight of the racing calendar is perhaps the Listed Ruby Stakes which takes place at the August festival. The course is a left-handed oval, one mile and two furlongs in circumference.
A left-handed oval of just over nine furlongs. It is a sharp track with the first bend after the winning post being particularly tight. There are no races at a mile or less.
History: The current County Kerry course has been running since 1936 and is, without question, once of the most beautifully set racecourses in the world. Right in the heart of Kerry’s tourist epicentre, Killarney is a very scenic place indeed and its racecourse encompasses that natural wonder. There are three summer festivals at Killarney races, all equal in stature and competitiveness of racing. Both flat and jump racing is held around this fairly tight left-handed track which is just over a mile long.
Primarily, racing is held in the evening time making the racecourse the ideal venue to round off a day of local sightseeing.
Located on the outskirts of the town just off the Killarney/Kenmare road, the racecourse attracts high-class racehorses for races like the Kingdom Gold Cup, the Cairn Rouge Stakes, the Ruby Stakes on the Flat and a number of valuable races over hurdles and fences.
