Course Info:
Address: Mill Road, Gowran Demesne, Kilkenny
Description: Gowran Park is a horse race course in County Kilkenny, Ireland. It is located in the Annely Estate near the village of Gowran. The first meeting was held in 1914.[1] and the first ever racecourse commentary in Ireland took place here in 1952.
Best known for staging the historic Thyestes Chase in January of each year, Gowran Park is renowned as one of the most scenic racecourses in the country. Situated close to many famed training and breeding establishments in the heart of County Kilkenny, Gowran Park hosts regular high-profile races over the jumps and on the Flat and is in use all year round.
The Thyestes is the most valuable event at the course and attracts the biggest crowds to the picturesque venue. Trials for the bigger National Hunt festivals at home and abroad take place at the course in mid-February and a number of stars of the Flat have also graced the turf there. Gowran Park plays its part as the new National Hunt season gets into full swing every year with a major two-day festival in October.
The race course is also home to a highly-regarded 18-hole golf course and is located just outside the village of Gowran on the old Dublin/Waterford road.
Description: Gowran Park stages the Thyestes Chase and has a Listed race on the Flat. It’s essentially two different racecourses. In the summer, when the ground is good, it’s quite a fast track. From the winning post you climb all the way on the back straight to the highest part of the track and then when you turn it’s downhill all the way to the furlong pole. In the winter it can be very heavy - the three fences on the home straight can take a lot of jumping. In the summer when it’s quick you really can’t be off the pace.
Gowran Park hosts 16 race days throughout the year with both National Hunt and Flat meetings.
The racing season at Gowran Park has quality fixtures spread evenly throughout the year starting with the Thyestes Handicap Chase in January.
Race Day Facilities:
Overlooking the racecourse, the panoramic rooftop restaurant offers you the opportunity to dine in style on a race day. Impress your clients, reward your staff or simply dine in the company of friends and family in the warm and bright surroundings. Step out onto the balcony and scream your horse home. Race day dining is an affordable option, representing excellent value.
Various hospitality options are available on both race days and non-race days. Full table service is operated on race days.
Race Day Self Service Area
If you just want something quick and easy Gowran Park has a self-service area located on the middle floor. Food varies from soup and sandwiches to full roast dinners. There is also a hot-beef roll counter located on the lower floor, so no matter what you won’t go hungry on the day. An outdoor Barbeque Menu is served at summer fixtures – weather permitting.
Full bar facilities are available on all floors.
