Description: Clonmel Racecourse (Powerstown Park) is a horse racing venue in the town of Clonmel, County Tipperary, Ireland which stages both National Hunt and Flat racing.
but is the only one that races throughout the year, hosting a total of 12 meetings under both Flat and National Hunt rules. As well as horse racing, it is famous for the world-renowned National Hare Coursing festival that takes place over the course of three days in the middle of the track every February and attracts over 30,000 attendees over the course of the festivities.
The course is run entirely on tarmac paths. Some sections of the course may accumulate mud, leaves and puddles after rain. Dependent on availability, marshals will be at key sections of the course, or signs will be in place.
History: For all the enjoyment on offer, the racing is taken seriously and has featured some of the biggest names in the industry, such as the celebrated Beef or Salmon, Danoli and the ever popular Doran's Pride. Powerstown is recognised as a demanding national hunt course and features a stiff uphill climb, followed by a gradual downhill run with an uphill finish.
The course is located in the Powerstown area of the town 2km from the town centre. It is a right handed track of one and a quarter miles with a stiff uphill finish. Racing has taken place at the venue for over 150 years. In November, the Grade 2 Clonmel Oil Chase, has been contested and won by some notable horses including Beef or Salmon in 2002.
The highlights of the programme at Clonmel all come in the National Hunt sphere, with it hosting three Graded races through the course of the year. The best known of those is the Grade 2 Clonmel Oil Chase which takes place in November and has been won by such stars as Imperial Call, Dorans Pride (four times), Beef Or Salmon, Edredon Bleu, War Of Attrition and Sizing Europe.
