Course Info:
Address: Althrey Ct, Bangor-on-Dee, Wrexham LL13 0DA
Description: Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located in Bangor-on-Dee near Wrexham, Wales.
It is a left-handed National Hunt racecourse, and does not have a grandstand.
Left handed, fairly sharp, minor surface undulations. Races usually well run, especially on hurdle course, possibly on account of runners being on the turn pretty much throughout. Fences generally regarded as being fairly stiff for a lesser NH course, though recent evidence doesn't support this.
History: Bangor is a very tight circuit, 1½ miles round, racing left handed (anti-clockwise) with some undulations. The course is also unusual in that the finishing straight is head-on to the main enclosures, although it is possible to walk down the side of the course beside the finishing post. The big disadvantage of Bangor is there is very little shelter if it rains.
Racing first took place at Bangor on Dee Racecourse in February 1859, and has since taken place regularly except during the wars.
Since 2006 Bangor has also hosted amateur Point-to-Point races run by local hunts. The course for the Point-to-Point is on the inside of the main track and races are run right-handed.
In May 2012, all former Tote betting positions were replaced by the racecourse's own in-house bangorBET betting system.
The Clerk of the Course is Andrew Morris, who is also Clerk of the Course at sister track Chester, where flat racing takes place.
With relatively easy jumps, apart from a tricky open ditch, the horses jumping is not too strongly tested. The track is a turning one with very few straight sections. Being a sharpish track it would normally be expected that front runners are favoured, however the 325 yard run-in does result in some fast finishing types grabbing the spoils on the line.
