Description: Newton Abbot Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located on the north bank of the River Teign in the parishes of Kingsteignton and Teigngrace just north of Newton Abbot, Devon, England. The course is a tight, flat left-handed oval of about 1 mile 1 furlong. There are seven relatively easy fences to a circuit and a very short run in to the finish.
Left handed, tight. Favours handy types, with prominently-ridden horses at an advantage more often than not. Fences pose few problems. Very short run-in on hurdles course means the lead very rarely changes hands from the last.
Jump racing takes place throughout the year at Newton Abbot but its main emphasis is on summer jumping with the highlight being the Lord Mildmay Memorial Handicap Chase. Upgraded to Listed status in 2008, the contest takes place in August and is run over two miles and five and a half furlongs. Kings Brook won the race in both 2006 and 2007 for trainer Nick Williams and Take The Stand won the race in 2004 before finishing second in that season’s Cheltenham Gold Cup. Welsh trainer Peter Bowen was also successful in 2008 with Snoopy Loopy, who went onto win the Grade 1 Betfair Lancashire Chase at Haydock.
History: The course was first established in 1866 when the 91-acre (370,000 m2) site was purchased. The main grandstand was built in 1969 and opened by the Queen Mother, while the corporate facilities were opened in 1990.
Located in the heart of Devon, on the banks of the river Teign, the racecourse was founded in 1866 by a group of local racing fans, who clubbed together to buy the land and establish a focal point for horse racing in the area. From its early beginnings, Newton Abbot racecourse has held race meetings every year since - the only exceptions being during the two World Wars.
Its main grandstand was opened in 1969 by the Queen Mother. Throughout the year, the venue also hosts a number of small-scale activities such as antiques fairs and car boot sales.
Although small, Newton Abbot has received several accolades for its quality as a racing venue. It won the Racehorse Owners Association Gold Award four years running (2012-2015), was voted the ‘best small racecourse in the west’, and was shortlisted as a contender for Best Racecourse in the UK in 2013.
With a regular plan of development taking place over the winter months, Newton Abbot is constantly evolving and adding new facilities to ensure it retains its reputation as one of the premiere small independent racing venues in the country.
