Course Info:
Address: Racecourse, Fakenham NR21 7NY
Description: Fakenham Racecourse is a thoroughbred horse racing venue located south of Fakenham, Norfolk, England.
The course is left-handed, almost square in shape, with a circumference of about a mile. The steeplechase course is situated to the outside of the hurdle course and consists of six fences per circuit, with the open ditch as the penultimate obstacle.
Left handed, very sharp, with a short run-in on both courses. The tightest jumps track in the country and, in theory, ideal for handy, front-running types as opposed to long-striding gallopers, though underfoot conditions are usually more testing than advertised and races often strongly-run, too, resulting in the emphasis being much more on stamina than might be expected. As a result, there is a fairly high proportion of casualties over fences for a minor track.
History: National Hunt racing has taken place at Fakenham since 1905 and the course hosts action throughout the winter. The highlight of the season is the Fakenham Silver Cup, which is a class three handicap hurdle ran over two miles, that takes place during their Spring National Hunt meeting in March.
The Prince of Wales is Patron of Fakenham racecourse and officially opened a new £1million Members’ Stand in 2002, which is named after His Royal Highness. Her Majesty the Queen’s horse Gold Award won a Bumper at Fakenham on his first start before running in the 2008 Champion Bumper at the Cheltenham Festival. It is also the venue for the West Norfolk Hunt’s Point to Point.
A short lived greyhound racing track was opened on the course by the Kimberley and Wymondham Greyhound Club. The racing was independent (not affiliated to the sports governing body the National Greyhound Racing Club) and was known as a flapping track, which was the nickname given to independent tracks. Meetings were held during 1999.
