Course Info:
Address: Catterick Bridge, Richmond DL10 7PE
Description: Catterick Racecourse, sometimes known as Catterick Bridge Racecourse, is a thoroughbred horse racing venue one mile north west of Catterick in North Yorkshire, England, near the hamlet of Catterick Bridge. The first racing at Catterick was held in 1783. The feature event at the course is the North Yorkshire Grand National held in January. There are plans to create an All Weather track and change the layout of the National Hunt course.
Situated 14 miles south of Darlington, Catterick racecourse is adjacent to the A1 with relatively easy road access.
Access by public transport isn’t that easy with the nearest railway station being at Darlington, some 14 miles away. From there it is a bus journey of about 45 minutes, buses do stop outside the racecourse. Train times to Darlington are London 2½ hours, York 35 mins, Newcastle 35 mins.
Track: The track is left-handed, sharp and undulating, just over a mile round, with a 3 furlong run-in. The gravel subsoil means the going is usually good. It has been said that "it is not one of the North's most glamorous fixtures".
The Catterick Sunday Market, held on the racecourse grounds, is the largest Sunday Market in the North of England. The international flat racing champion Collier Hill won his first race here in March 2002.
The course favours front running types with short strides whose forte is speed rather than stamina. The free draining nature of the course means the course is rarely heavy. Draw Advantage: When the ground is testing high numbers have an advantage in 5f races, otherwise low numbers have an advantage over 5f.
